WHO IS A TEACHER?
A TEACHER IS:
An adviser
A friend
A guardian
A mobilizer
A model
A preacher
A trustee

Teaching is the interaction between the teacher and his/her students which results in change of behaviour and this change of behaviour must be relatively permanent. Teaching, therefore is science as well as an art. A science because it consists of body of organized knowledge. An art because it consists of skills which must be possessed by its practitioners.
In view of the above, a teacher is one who is well equipped with the knowledge ad art of teaching, engaged in training and changing individual’s behaviour toward a positive direction.

BASIC ROLES OF A TEACHER IN NATION BUILDING
Nation building is that art which involves harnessing the human and material resources for the development of the society. This being the case, the teacher has some tremendous roles to play.
Such as:
i. MOBILIZATION OF SOCIETY

The teacher is in the best position to use his knowledge the teacher is known as the reservoir of knowledge, for the development of the society by mobilizing its members. A clear example is a typical novel ‘Things Fall Apart’ on whom the Igbos depend on for everything they do not know about their tradition.

ii. TRAINING OF MANPOWER

In terms of human resources of any given society, teachers engage in teaching and training. Therefore, the teacher is the one that trains the manpower for the development of any nation.

iii. MODEL OF SOCIETY

The values of patriotism and nationalism are best inculcated by teachers; hence they are called the mirrors of the society for nation building.

iv. FACILITATOR OF EDUCATION

Educational system of any nation depends on its development for survival, for it to survive rest on the teachers as well. Teacher’s role as a custodian and a facilitator of knowledge is very crucial to nation building.
